The BPTCond Laboratory Conductivity Meter by PrismaTech, also known as the Benchtop Conductivity Meter, is a device designed to measure the electrical conductivity of electrolyte solutions and liquids (solutions containing both positive and negative ions).
In essence, the laboratory or benchtop conductivity meter, also referred to as a laboratory EC meter, measures the concentration of dissolved ions in an electrolyte solution.
Electrolyte solutions can vary widely in ion concentration, ranging from extremely low concentrations, such as distilled water, to very high concentrations, such as dense chemical solutions.
To measure the conductivity of solutions in laboratory applications, the probe of the laboratory EC meter or benchtop conductivity meter is immersed in the sample solution. The device then applies an alternating electrical current to two or four electrodes submerged in the liquid and measures the induced voltage between them.
During this process, cations (positively charged ions) move toward the negative electrode, while anions (negatively charged ions) move toward the positive electrode.
The benchtop conductivity meter, also known as an electrical conductivity meter or EC meter, measures conductivity using a probe that applies an alternating electrical current to two or four electrodes. This setup allows the device to measure the electrical resistance of the solution.
After immersing the electrodes in the liquid, the instrument applies a voltage between them. The electrical resistance of the solution causes a voltage drop, which is then measured. When current is applied, positively charged ions (cations) move toward the negative electrode and negatively charged ions (anions) move toward the positive electrode. This ion movement generates the electrical conductivity of the solution.
By measuring the conductivity of a solution, valuable insights can be gained about its composition and the particles it contains.
Conductivity and pH are two fundamental parameters for determining the acidity or alkalinity of solutions. Measuring conductivity is also an important analytical process used in many industrial applications.
This type of measurement is considered one of the least specific analytical techniques because it does not differentiate between different conductive substances dissolved in the solution. Therefore, conductivity measurement is used in processes where identifying the specific conductive material in the solution is unnecessary.
For example, in the production of ultrapure water used in semiconductor chip manufacturing, this method is applied because the presence of any dissolved conductive substance is undesirable. Another example is in saltwater, where large amounts of salt are dissolved, and the conductivity measurement helps determine the concentration of the solution.
